The OLED (organic light-emitting diode) lighting market will reach $6 billion by 2018, according to DisplaySearch.

DisplaySearch says the OLED market will start to pick up in 2011, with Philips, GE, Konica Minolta, Lumiotec, and OSRAM entering mass production.

“OLED lighting devices emit from the surface, can be made flexible/rollable, and even transparent like a window or reflective like a mirror,” says Jennifer Colegrove, director of display technologies at DisplaySearch.

“OLED lighting is thin, rugged, lightweight, and has fast switch-on times, wide operating temperatures, no noise and is environmentally friendly. The power efficiency of OLED lighting has also improved dramatically in recent years.”

DisplaySearch previously predicted that the OLED display market will see sales hit $3.1 billion by 2012. The company also believes OLED displays will be the fastest-growing application over the next eight years.

Sony debuted the first OLED TV in the U.S. and has since joined forces with Panasonic, Sharp, and Toshiba to mass produce OLED TVs and reduce manufacturing costs.
